Common Questions

What actually happens at a church service?

A Sunday at Hue.Church runs about 70 minutes. Doors open at 10:15 and service starts at 10:30. You will get coffee, sing a few songs with the band, hear a message from the Bible for about half an hour, and be out the door a little before noon.

Not knowing the order of events is one of the most uncomfortable parts of visiting a church for the first time. You end up watching everyone else for cues about when to stand and when to sit. So here is the whole thing in advance, with no surprises.

You park in the free lot and come in. Doors open at 10:15, which is a good time to arrive if you want coffee and a minute to get your bearings. Someone will say hello and point you where you need to go. If you have kids, that is when you check them in, and it takes about two minutes.

At 10:30 the band starts. There are usually three or four songs, about twenty minutes total. The words are on the screen. People sing, some people do not, some people stand and others stay seated, and all of that is genuinely fine. Nobody is watching you.

After the songs there is a short welcome and a few announcements about what is coming up. Then one of our pastors, usually Ps. Sam Perli, teaches from the Bible for around thirty to thirty five minutes. It is a normal talk, not a performance. He works through a passage and connects it to the ordinary parts of life in the Bay Area, which is to say work, money, anxiety, family, and the question of what any of it is for.

We close with a song and a short prayer, and that is it. You are out by about 11:40. Some people leave immediately and some stay in the lobby talking for another half hour. Both are normal. There is no part of the morning where visitors get asked to stand up or identify themselves, and there is no moment where you are put on the spot.

If that sounds like something you could handle on a Sunday, let us know you are coming and we will look for you.
